„In a Sentimental Mood“ wurde von Duke Ellington komponiert, die im Jahr 1935 entstand und zunächst von ihm mit seinem Orchester aufgenommen wurde. Manny Kurtz schrieb kurze Zeit später einen Text zu dieser sehr gefühlvollen Ballade; neben ihm ist Irving Mills als Textautor eingetragen.
Laut Ellington komponierte er das Lied auf einer Party, weil ein Freund von ihm Streit mit jemand hatte und er wollte mit dem Lied die Stimmung beruhigen und den Streit aus der Welt schaffen. „In a sentimental Mood“ ist bis heute eine oft gespielte Jazzballade.
