„Take the A Train“ wurde 1939 von Billy Strayhorn getextet und komponiert. Duke Ellington und sein Orchester verwendeten zwei Jahre später die Komposition als Erkennungsmelodie und machten so „Take the A Train“ zu einem der wichtigsten und markantesten Stücke der Swing-Ära.
Der Titel bezieht sich auf die Linie A der New York City Subway, die von Brooklyn über Lower Manhattan nach Harlem führt. Die Melodie von „Take the A Train“ fand auch Verwendung in Filmen, auf der Bühne und sogar in Videospielen.
